Calling Around the World for Less

Are you an international caller? Do you do business overseas? Study abroad? Have family or friends in other countries? We have tips to help you call internationally for less!

RULE #1 Never use an operator until it is a dire emergency! Any other option, but not this one! (this does not include person-to-person or collect calls). If you do need to use an operator we found these tips helpful:

• Dial "0" followed by the number you are calling. This can speed up your connection and may result in lower connection charges depending on your carrier.
• Dial "00" and tell the operator the number you are calling along with any specific information about the call (person-to-person, for example)

RULE #2 The popular prepaid calling card, or phone card. Since these are usually portable they can be a low cost alternative.

• Caution: Be aware of connection fees, maintenance costs, and expiration dates. A good idea is to use a rechargeable card which you can simply add funds to when you need to rather than having to purchase a brand new card. We offer several rechargeable cards through SpeedyPin
• Most card are now "virtual cards" meaning you receive instructions and PIN number to use by email or snail mail, but no plastic card. Rates are very competitive with calling cards.

RULE #3 Calling cellular/mobile international numbers can be expensive because countries have their own telecom system and some countries will make you pay international connection tarrifs on top of the cost per minute. Calling FROM a cell phone in the USA as well, has its own problems. Calls can be extremely high for international dialing.

The dialaround has long been used to by pass high international rates charged by your long distance provider or cell phone service. Just as the name implies, dialarounds use a special prefix or access number to dial around your phone company at cheaper rates.
